Tracking Goal Progress Using Milestones with Sum Aggregation

1. Selecting Progress Type for milestones

While creating goals under Measure Progress, you will need to select a progress type. Please note that milestones can be applied to any progress type except the default progress type

2. Setting Start and Target Values

Enter the start and target values for your progress type

3. Adding Milestones to Your Goal

To add milestones for your goal, click on the Add Milestones button located below the Measure Progress section

4. Select Milestone Calculation Method

After clicking Add Milestones, the Goal Milestones window will open.Under Summarize Progress, select the Sum method. This option adds the progress achieved in each milestone and displays the total progress on the parent goal

5. Enter Milestone Targets

After selecting the Summarize Progress method as Sum, you need to enter the start and target values for each milestone month. Based on the goal cycle selected (in this example, Quarter 4, 2025), the cycle is split across October, November, and December. Enter the start and target values for each month according to your requirements. Please note that the combined values of all milestones must not exceed the allowable range of the main goal

1. Understand the Maximum Range Allowed

Formula:
Maximum Range = Target Value of Main Goal – Start Value of Main Goal

1. Example:

   • Main goal start value = 5

   • Main goal target value = 100

   • Maximum achievable range = 100 – 5 = 95

2. Important Note:
   The sum of all milestone values cannot exceed the maximum allowed range(95 in this example).

2. Calculate Individual Milestone Range

Formula:
Milestone Range = Target Value – Start Value

1. Example Values:

   • October: Start = 2, Target = 50 → Range = 50 – 2 = 48

   • November: Start = 5, Target = 40 → Range = 40 – 5 = 35

   • December: Start = 1, Target = 10 → Range = 10 – 1 = 9

3. Verify Total Milestone Ranges

1. Add all milestone range values:
   48 + 35 + 9 = 92

2. Compare to maximum allowed range:

   • 92 < 95 → Milestones are valid

6. Click Save

After entering the start and target values, click Save to create the milestones

7. Creating the Goal

After saving the milestones, click on the Create button to create the goal

8. October 2025 Check-In Progress Calculation

For October 2025, the system calculates progress for the goal based on the milestone and check-in values:

1. Overall Goal Values:

   • Start Value: 5

   • Target Value: 100

2. October Milestone Values:

   • Milestone Start Value: 2

   • Check-in Value: 6

3. Calculating Monthly Gain:

   • The system calculates the gain for October by subtracting the milestone start value from the check-in value:

     Gain = Check-in Value - Milestone Start Value = 6 − 2 = 4

4. Updating Overall Progress:

   • The monthly gain is then added to the overall goal start value to determine the current progress:

     Current Progress=Overall Start Value+ Gain = 5 + 4 = 9

5. Result:

   • The current progress for the goal after October’s check-in is 9.

9. November 2025 Check-In Progress Calculation

For November 2025, the system calculates progress for the goal using the milestone and check-in values as follows:

1. Overall Goal Values:

   • Start Value: 5

   • Target Value: 100

2. November Milestone Values:

   • Milestone Start Value: 5

   • Check-in Value: 10

3. Calculating Monthly Gain:

   • The system calculates the gain for November by subtracting the milestone start value from the check-in value:

     Gain=Check-in Value − Milestone Start Value = 10 − 5 = 5

4. Updating Overall Progress:

   • The November gain is added to the progress already achieved in October:
     Current Progress=Overall Start Value + October Gain + November Gain = 5 + 4 + 5 = 14

5. Result:

   • The current progress for the goal after November’s check-in is 14.

10. December 2025 Check-In Progress Calculation

For December 2025, the system calculates progress for the goal based on the milestone and check-in values as follows:

1. Overall Goal Values:

   • Start Value: 5

   • Target Value: 100

2. December Milestone Values:

   • Milestone Start Value: 1

   • Check-in Value: 20

3. Calculating Monthly Gain:

   • The system calculates the gain for December by subtracting the milestone start value from the check-in value:

     Gain = Check-in Value − Milestone Start Value = 20 −1 = 19

4. Updating Overall Progress:

   • The December gain is added to the progress achieved in the previous months:

     Current Progress= Overall Start Value + October Gain + November Gain + December Gain = 5 + 4 + 5 + 19 = 33

5. Result:

   • The current progress for the goal after December’s check-in is 33.
